In 1818, Frankenstein was published under an anonymous author, later revealed to be a woman named Mary Shelley. It is heralded as an early example of science fiction, if not the first true science fiction story. (Her mother, also a writer, wrote a book called “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman” in 1792. Women’s rights! 1792!)
